#8 LOW VACCINATION RATES IN THE LARGEST MAJORITY BLACK CITY
Failed public health response in the wake of worldwide pandemic - At the beginning of the covid pandemic, Detroit was identified as one of the hotspots for the covid pandemic, with Black Detroiters experiencing higher rates of covid death and illness rooted in systemic and structural racism in the medical and health care system. Now, in 2021 Detroit has one of the lowest covid vaccination rates in the nation. With only 43% of eligible Detroiters having received one dose, the shortfall is especially critical among the younger population. The data reflects the general ambivalence of the local health department to respond to credible population health crisis among the city’s majority Black residents.
2021 was another difficult year for many Detroiters.
The problems we face have been intensified by the failures of Mayor Duggan, Detroit City Council Members and the City Departments that implement their policy. The pains we feel have increased due to the failure of many community leaders to demand better for majority Black Detroit.
