The Future of Health is the worst deal yet!
Detroit - Last night, December 12, 2023, was the conclusion of the Future of Health project’s community benefits process. As anticipated the negotiations went poorly with the city and the developer heavily influencing the process and outcomes.
The Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) voted 6 to 2 (with 1 missing) in favor of the developer’s proposals. The proposed benefits packed approved by the NAC is the worst and most inequitable deal Detroit has seen to date. And that’s saying a lot.
This model of development continues to threaten and undermine the well-being of majority Black Detroit. The next steps for the project will be the DBRA and then City Council in January. Stay tuned to Detroit People’s Platform as we continue to push back against development that hurts majority Black Detroit.
Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Tonight!
This evening the Future of Health deal goes to the Community Advisory Council for the Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (DBRA). The meeting will be at 5pm and can be attended virtually (details below). We anticipate the DBRA CAC will recommend the proposed Brownfield Plan for consideration by the full Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority board and the recommendation for a public hearing on the plan.
We will be monitoring the meeting and documenting the discrepancies between the benefits sought by vulnerable residents in the impact area and the approval of the project by the Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC). The NAC does not represent resident voice as the majority of them were appointed by Director Antione Bryant’s Planning and Development department.
The DBRA should NOT approve the brownfield plan for the Future of Health until it adequately responds to the needs of the most vulnerable residents in the impact area. These are the residents who will be negatively impacted by this project and whose needs should be addressed for the project to access public tax resources.
